Guys! I have a great little gem for you today! This is an Unsung Heroes episode, and this one is
bonkers! It is Apphia. And yes, I looked up how to pronounce her name in Greek. Sadly, I did
not have that idea until I recorded the first version of this episode. So, this is actually my Take
2! But she is card #29 from the Persecuted Church set.
Let’s start out by reading her ability. “You may exchange a clay card in hand with a clay
Enhancement in discard pile with “Christ” or “Jesus” in the title or scripture verse.”
The more you look at this card, the better it gets. When this set was released, there were only 3
rotation clay Enhancements that had “Christ” in the title, and none that said “Jesus.” And if you
include the cards that mentioned Christ or Jesus in the scripture verse, that added up to 10
rotation cards at your disposal. Not too shabby. And I wasn’t back in the game yet when
rotation became a thing, so there may have been a number of Scrolls cards that worked with
Apphia as well.
As the years rolled on, she has been back-shelved and mostly forgotten about. That, I think, is a
shame. Especially since the GoC set has come out. There is an RoJ, FoM, Roots, and even a
couple of cloud clay enhancements Apphia can use. But GoC is what makes her shine.
Specifically, Authority of Christ. I’m sure the moment I read Apphia’s special ability, many of
you were thinking about Authority of Christ. And with good reason. What a powerhouse of a
card to get to re-use!
But the fun doesn’t stop there. There are currently 21 clay enhancements Apphia can use. I
won’t go through them all, but they are on the screen for your reference. Ones I do want to
highlight are the ones I see in a lot of disciple decks: Life Through Christ, Life in the Son, Power
of the Spirit, Untouchable, and Resurrection of Martyrs. Sliding Apphia into a Disciples deck can
be incredibly beneficial. Apphia also grabs the covenant Eternal Covenant which can be used to
bring her back from the discard pile if your opponent catches wise and tries to get rid of her.
Again, I think her best trick is getting Authority of Christ back again and again. And with her
modest numbers, getting initiative back after the defender is presented shouldn’t be too hard.
